Nerd Church - Strange Days

Strange days are here to stay
Ever since Bowie died
It hasn't been the same

- Green Day, Strange Days Are Here To Stay

Title: Strange Days

The world's weird, right now.

Maybe it always is, always was, always will be.

Still, I can't help but feel - and I know other people will agree - that we're in the middle of a particularly weird and wacky period.

The 2020s haven't exactly been an easy ride so far, and it looks like that isn't changing any time soon.

But whoever you are, wherever you are - keep going.

There's not a lot that one person can do against the tidal wave of strange-and-wrong that seems to be sweeping through the world - the US being the blaring example right now, of course.

(Trust me though, in the rest of the world we have our own problems. Not everything is always about the USA... but you do make it kind of difficult to ignore you. Your sicknesses tend to spread.)

But that doesn't mean there's nothing you can do. There are things, small though they may seem.

It's always worth being a butterfly

- letting your small actions of doing what you can, when you can, build up and join those little ripples made by the other butterflies. Make a cyclone with your wings.

Change doesn't just come in the dramatic moments

 - it's part of the everyday actions we can take, where possible; to pave the way, to turn the tide, or just to show those who need it that someone, somewhere, does care.

Most of all I want you to take care of yourselves, as best you can.

Keep putting one metaphorical foot in front of the other.

Keep taking the tiniest of steps, even when life knocks you down.

Keep resting up when you need to, then taking a deep breath and taking that first metaphorical step forward.

Keep prioritising your health and well-being, as much as you are able.

Keep understanding that steps back can and will happen, but that pushing forwards will counteract those back-steps, bit by bit.

It's hard - trust me, there's no need to explain to me just how hard life can be. I know.

But just trying? Even thinking about trying? Makes you a f**king rock star.

Especially those of you feeling especially vulnerable right now - for whatever reason.

Whether it's because you're from a marginalised group, or you're worried about your rights as a woman -

(Trans inclusive - feminism is intersectional, or it's not feminism, #SorryNotSorry)

- or your reproductive rights specifically, or your right to stay in the country you live in, or whether you need to leave an unsafe place you're living in...

Or if life is feeling not-great because the rent is due, or work's been hard, or you've got family stresses, or school problems, or a health scare, or whatever.

Whatever is going on in this badly-steered world that seems to be more and more terrifyingly out-of-control, just keep going, keep doing the best you can.

Take care of yourself. And do what you can, when you can, for other people.

Be the butterfly, you weird and wonderful rock stars - you got this, even when it feels like you don't.

(Was this another pep talk to myself? At least partially yes, yes it was 😅)

  1. The world has gone to s*it everywhere. We in Italy haven't been (aren't) immune from the disaster turn it's taken in the last years. It will take more than a single butterfly effect, but maybe if we make that cyclone...
