It's Thursday, I am so tired and stressed, so let's get some comics-y superhero-y goodness!
Sticky Situations
So, there's this trailer for the upcoming Madame Web movie... and I'm not sure what to make of it.
Madame Web, in case you didn't know, is a Spider-Man character from the comics.
She's kind of hard to pin down as a character - anti-hero would probably be the closest, but she kind of wanders around the hero-villain spectrum quite a bit.
In early comics she had a variety of life-impacting/life-threatening disabilities, but that changed over time. Looks like it's not a thing here, either - from the trailer, anyway.
So, yeah - the trailer.
This is one of those things that balances on that knife-edge between excellent and terrible, y'know?
And I'm not sure, just yet, which one it's likely to be. Guess we'll just have to wait and find out!
Warning: flashing images, violence, injury
Glorious Purpose

Right, I'm going to make this section SPOILER-free, but I just had to talk a li'l bit about how good the last episode of Loki is because -
- OH MY FREAKING GOD!
The acting! The twists! The music! The visuals! THE WAY IT ALL FREAKING COMBINED!!!!
That ending was just... beautiful.
So beautiful. In so many different ways.
A 'why didn't this happen?' aside:
You couldn't have let him kiss Mobius just once?!
Or even suggest that, had things been different, that might have been a possibility?!
Iesu Grist, Marvel - let the Queer sh** happen when your main character is canonically Queer! Argh!
(And no, I don't think it's Bi erasure - Bi people in M/F relationships are still Bi - but the just-out-of-reach teasing of a possible M/M relationship was very reminiscent of Queerbaiting. Difficult to do with a canonically Queer character, but here we are.)
An absolutely accurate* summary of Loki, episode 2.6, aka THE LAST EPISODE:
*Any accuracy is purely coincidental
OK - SPOILERS for episode 6 of series 2 of Loki, OK? SPOILERS.
SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!
OK, great.

Past!Sylvie: ...I'm not telling you that that's OK.
Loki: ...Uh, no. What I want are options. Because they have yet to invent the algebra that tells you when I last slept.
Past!Sylvie: Oh... I don't know. I got nothing.
Loki: Great, thanks. That's swell, Sylvie, your contributions are much appreciated.
4.
Loki: So how do you decide who lives and who dies?
Past!Mobius: We don't kill, we prune.
Loki: Ugh. Whatever. What makes the decision?
Past!Mobius: The Time Keepers, duh.
Loki: Ugh. I mean... when does something make a Nexus event?
Past!Mobius: ...I don't understand the question.
Loki: ...You mean it's timey-wimey stuff, and no-one really knows. Great. Just great.

While the ending of Loki wasn't something I necessarily expected, I still found it to be a really well crafted finale. I'm soooo curious as to where the Marvel phases will go from here and I appreciated the lack of a post credits scene. I think we could really see the story as closed in that regard as opposed to just waiting for whatever comes next through a credits scene.
ReplyDeleteI think they understood that people are starting to get tired of the post-credits-ness being advertising for other properties.
