It's Thursday, this is Dora Reads, so let's get some comics-y superhero-y goodness!
It's Certainly A Trailer...
The trailer for Aquaman 2, aka Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is out and... it's OK.
(I'll talk about the semi-aquatic metaphorical elephant in the room that is Amber Heard after I've embedded the trailer, so feel free to skip that.)
It looks OK.
It's certainly a trailer. For Aquaman. An Aquaman trailer, if you will.
...It just looks a bit meh, tbh. Take-it-or-leave-it, y'know?
But then - Aquaman is far from my favourite (and literally only Jason Momoa can make that hideous costume look good,) and DC trailers are often not great.
So maybe the film will be good? Stranger things have happened.
See what you think:
Warning: flashing images, general violence
OK, semi-aquatic metaphorical elephant time: Amber Heard.
Warning: discussions of domestic abuse
Let's make one thing clear - you can 100% disagree with me on this, and I'm fine with that. I'm just some random internet blogger, OK? OK.
So, Amber Heard does appear in this trailer, but you'd be forgiven for not noticing - because it's totally blink-and-you'll-miss-it.
I get why she doesn't appear much in the trailer - but it feels like a cop-out.
Like, if you're sticking with her, then nail your colours to the metaphorical mast, y'know?
That said, it's impossible for any movie company to know WTF to do with either her or Johnny Depp, because those two are 100% the only ones who know what really happened, and their accounts are so far apart that... it's a tricky one.
I am NOT saying Depp is innocent. But neither am I saying Heard is.
BOTH allege abuse against the other.
There is evidence of poor behaviour on both their parts.
...And I can't help but feel that if those tricksy social roles were reversed, and Depp was caught on audio admitting to hitting Heard (as Heard was of Depp,) then things would be a lot more cut-and-dry for the studio, publicity-wise.
Which is not a great feeling. But then, it's also not a great feeling when you think of the allegations against Depp.
You know that my aim here is always responsibility and nuance* - I believe both in innocent until proven guilty, and believing victims.
That means that BOTH are innocent, and BOTH are victims - at the same time.
*(I know, I know... nuance and responsibility on the internet. Phew! It's a big ask, right there.)
Shameless Self-Promo Time!
No superhero-related promo this week, but you should totally check out my short story 'The Greatest Thieves' right here on Dora Reads
What do you make of the Aquaman trailer?
Could anyone else make that costume look good?
Talk to me! 😊💬

Sharing and commenting is awesome! 😁
I agree with your thoughts on Heard. Well put!
ReplyDeleteThanks Em!
DeleteI considered not mentioning it, but then I was like, 'would I not be mentioning because I don't think I can word my thoughts correctly, or that what I would say would be irresponsible or ill-informed, OR am I just avoiding controversy?'
And it turns out I was just avoiding controversy, nothing else - and that's not something I do here! My voice is valid when used responsibly dammit! Lol.
