It's Thursday, life is hard sometimes, this is Dora Reads, so let's get some comics-y superhero-y goodness!
Brilliant Blue Beetle
Another trailer for DC's Blue Beetle - and this film looks amazing!
Fun, action-packed, and quirky - what more could you want?
Also, don't mess with nana, clearly 😅
Warning: flashing images, general violence, mild body horror
Plenty of Persephones
I put the Webtoons app on my phone because clearly I have no will power.
(Webtoons, or Webtoon without the 's' - kind of not clear - is a webcomics platform, btw. #NowYaKnow)
So, I ended up reading way too many comics (shocker,) -
- starting with Linda Sejic's Punderworld where a shy Hades and an over-worked Persephone are trying to find their way to romance, out of sight of her over-bearing mother, Demeter.
Full disclosure: I'm mutuals with Linda on Twitter, and have been Internet-friendly with her over the years. Plus, I'm generally a huge fan of her work.
Punderworld is also available in print.
And because of all the handy 'more like this' options, I ended up reading a few other series featuring Hades and Persephone 😅
Next up is Rachel Smythe's Lore Olympus which...
look, I know that a lot of people love this series.
And I've only just started it, so I might get more into it as I'm reading, but at the moment, as with so many ultra-hyped series, it's just OK - nothing spectacular, but definitely readable.
The neon art deco style is certainly unique - it doesn't always land but when it does it's truly beautiful, and I can appreciate that.
Like I said, I haven't read much of it - so who knows? I might really get into it.
Lore Olympus is also available in print.
Persephone is only partly present in Kierqe's Hooked on Chthonics - which looks at the day-to-day running of the Underworld, while those pesky mortals and demigods keep interfering.
This series is fun, colourful, smart, and beautifully illustrated.
- Plus, when Persephone (who, in the myths, splits her time between Earth and the Underworld,) is on her Earth-stint, Hades has a smol plush Persephone to keep him company. Which is everything, to be honest - I love it. 😍
Also, Circe - acting as an intern in the Underworld - is a really fun gateway-character to travel alongside in order to learn about the whole set-up.
I've been reading plenty more webcomics, and I'm sure I'll tell you about a lot of them at some point, but I figured grouping these three together made the most sense to talk about for this week 😅
LGBTQ+ Comics Censored In Europe
EU country Hungary does not allow books with any LGBTQ+ content to be sold in the kids or teen section without having a wrapper covering them like they're cigarettes* or something.
- Y'know, in case kids grow up to be *shudders* well-adjusted and happy with themselves - we can't have that, obviously.
*...Cigarettes are sold in plain packaging in Wales, and stored behind covered panels. So that's what my brain went to. I have no idea what it's like in other countries.
Alice Oseman's popular M/M teen graphic novel Heartstopper, which has been adapted for Netflix, was *gasps* on-sale in the country's second-largest book chain without its sealed modesty cover!!!
Dun-dun-dun!!!
So now the Hungarian government have fined the company, Lira Konyv, for doing so.
Because we live in a bad timeline, and your LGBTQ+ friends need you to show up for us, and keep showing up for us. OK? Cool.
Shameless Self-Promo Time!
Over on Medium, you can check out me talking about Wolverine's costume in Deadpool 3 here...
...or you can see the same talky-talk in last week's CWU post on Dora Reads here.
Have you seen the Blue Beetle trailer?
Are you a big webcomics reader?
Talk to me! 😊💬

I just saw the Hadestown musical where Persephone is a largely featured character! I love Persephone adaptations so I will have to check Punderworld out.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I hope you do! I love Punderworld :)
