Comics Wrap-Up - The Few Brain Cells Which Might Be Present Go Right Out The Window

Title: Comics Wrap-Up. Background: lined-notebook-style-paper with speech bubbles containing heart symbols

It's Thursday, it's May, this is Dora Reads, and Comics Wrap-Up is back!

Marvel-ous The Marvels teaser!

*squeals*

The Marvels teaser! The Marvels. Teaser.

Kamala Khan, Monica Rambeau, and Carol Danvers, in one film!

This looks SO awesome! I'm totally looking forward to this one 😍😍😍

Warning: MAJOR flashing images, general violence

Blue Beetle Awesomeness!

Blue Beetle, aka Jaime Reyes, is a lesser-known DC character.

...And the trailer for the upcoming Blue Beetle film is pretty damn cool.

It also looks like a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to knowing more about this awesome Latino superhero 😊

Warning: mild flashing images, general violence, mild body horror

An Intriguing Invasion

I'm... intrigued, by the upcoming Secret Invasion series.

It could be absolutely excellent - and lord knows that the Disney+ TV series we've had from Marvel so far have been incredible but... it looks very action based.

And I know, I know, you're thinking 'it's a superhero movie, of course it's action based' - but what I mean is that I'm not seeing a hell of a lot of character in this trailer.

I do not mind action sequences at all, but sometimes the heart, and the few brain cells which might be present, go right out the window, y'know? And I'm hoping that doesn't happen here.

But still - Samuel L. Jackson, Martin Freeman, Olivia Colman, and Emilia Clarke. We're in pretty good hands, acting-wise!

Warning: flashing images, general violence including gun violence

Flashing Through

OK - the new The Flash trailer.

I'm not gonna rehash the Ezra Miller issues - if you wanna see my take on that you can check out the CWU Dora Reads post where I talked about it here, or my post on Medium here.

This trailer... looks like a trailer for a Batman movie. Or a Justice League movie.

I don't know whether it's an attempt to promote the 'bigger' superhero names, or the big-name actors, or whether it's an effort to downplay Ezra Miller's place in a movie where he plays the main character but...

It really doesn't feel like the trailer for a solo The Flash film, y'know?

And it's also very much maintaining the chaos of the first trailer - if not moreso.

If I was new to these characters or, especially, to the previous Batman, Superman, and Justice League films in the DC Entertainment Universe, I would be entirely confused. Just saying.

And maybe that's OK - maybe they only care about the people who have at least a passing familiarity with the current crop of DC films - but in contrast to The Blue Beetle trailer I talked about earlier, for example, where they don't expect you to know what's going on, this felt lacking.

Warning: flashing images, general violence, blood, murder, childhood trauma

Shameless Self-Promo Time!

In April I recommended not one but two pieces of The Umbrella Academy (TUA) fanfiction in April...

...the first was a time-loop crack fic, which you can see here...

...and the other was a nice character-based fic, looking at Klaus and Ben over the years, which you can see here.

Are you looking forward to any of these films/TV shows?

Do you get what I mean about the The Flash trailer?

  1. It took me so long to watch The Marvels trailer after it got released... I just kept forgetting. But when I did I got super excited. I've talked about my love for Ms. Marvel before, so I am just so pumped to see the Khans again.
