It's Thursday, I'm tired, let's get some comics-y superhero-y goodness!
The Metaphorical Elephant In The Room
...I considered not talking about the new trailer for The Flash movie.
Then I figured that I only wouldn't be talking about it because I'd be avoiding controversy, and that doesn't really sound like me 😅
So yeah, we're gonna do this sh**.
Warning: MAJOR flashing images, general violence
OK, the metaphorical elephant in the room: Ezra Miller.
For those not aware, Ezra Miller has... um... I don't even know how to describe the dumpster fire situation/s they've gotten themself into.*
Not least because I know that I don't know - couldn't possibly know - all the facts.
*Link CWS - Allegations of assault, death threats, domestic abuse, gun violence, grooming... and probably some other stuff, I don't even know.
So, how do I feel about Ezra Miller being in this - being the star of this - film, despite the... general sh**show that is their current circumstances?
I have no idea.
That's not a cop-out - I genuinely don't know how to feel about Miller still being in this. Conflicted, I think is the word.
Because I've seen so much contradictory information and counter-information about what did and did not go down that I have no clue what the truth is any more.
And I'm hesitant to ascribe too much authority to media which often misgenders Miller, and also seems to have no respect for their partner Tokata/Gibson Iron Eyes (who, at time of writing, uses both Takata and Gibson, and she/they pronouns,) and the fact that they're an adult.
I've seen people use transphobic tropes about Miller's relationship with her, with a glee that is quite frankly frightening.
I'm not saying that I know anything about the relationship. But Tokata's parents and Tokata clearly have very different views on the situation.*
*Link CWs - detailed allegations of grooming and domestic violence, drugs, self-harm
...But at the same time, a lot of the alleged behaviour on Miller's part raises a whole host of red flags and moral issues.
And without knowing the full extent of their mental health issues and circumstances (which we are not entitled to know,) we can't judge how responsible Ezra Miller is/was for their actions.
So, when it comes to what to think about the whole thing: I. Don't. Know.
And I'm OK with that. Shocking, I know. 😅
From the studios' point of view, of course, it comes down to the money.
I'm sure there have been actual meetings and risk calculations made by all sorts of people that we mere mortals are not privy to.
And the studio would have made the calculation that, to protect their investment, going ahead with the release is the best thing to do. Whether that's a sunk cost fallacy is to be determined.
I'm not naive enough to deny that, for those at the top, this whole thing begins and ends with the cash.
Now, as for the trailer itself: I didn't think it was that good.
Like, I feel like trailers are supposed to make you want to watch the film and this just... was messy.
Like, ooh! Batman! Ooh! Another Batman! - Yeah, great. And?
It just felt like undirected chaos - and spent way, way, too long with other heroes for a solo-hero movie.
That's not to say the movie itself won't be good - it's just the trailer was not great. In my opinion, anyway!
Shameless Self-Promo time!
Last week's Friday Fics Fix talked super-creative The Umbrella Academy fanfiction.
Because I am trash.

Thanks for all of these resources and for breaking down this very complicated situation a bit more, Cee! I think in my opinion I would have preferred them to recast Flash just because of all of this controversy, I can't even begin to comprehend all of this and it just seems like keeping Miller in the movie takes away from the movie itself, as well as takes attention away from all of the other hardworking ppl involved in it. But it also just seems that maybe Miller should be focusing on themself, getting help, rehabilitating as opposed to doing this movie. I just think it might've been best to put this character on the backburner while they heal. But hey, I don't know Miller personally, I don't know how/if they've been healing. Maybe all this speculation is wrong, and everything is fine! (In this dumpster fire of a world, fine is a relative term, but you get the point). These are just my thoughts as I begin to make sense of all the press.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with re-casting is that most of the filming was (unless I'm mistaken,) done before 2022 and everything that went down. So, do you pay to re-film? Do you scrap the whole thing? Do you paste someone else over the top like someone did with a Kevin Spacey film once? I have no idea.
DeleteThis film has been in the pipeline for years, and had a whole lot of production issues even before 2020 and Covid hit, so... I haven't seen Warner Bros' accounting. But you can guarantee that the numbers are what they're most concerned with, and their financial predictions are what they'll keep in mind.
