Nerd Church - You Can't Do All of the Things, All of the Time (And That's OK)

You Can't Do All of the Things, All of the Time (And That's OK)

I feel like it's a good time of year to remind myself of something:

I only have two hands.

Now, obviously, that makes sense literally (for me, at least) - but it works on a metaphorical/figurative type of way too.

I can only do what I can do - I only have so many hours in a day, so much energy to expend, so many resources to draw on... I only have two hands.

Which means that, despite how much I would like to do ALL of the things ALL of the time - because there are so many things out there to do, after all! - I can't.

No-one can.

We are human - fallible and messy and restricted by all sorts of physical and biological rules. Not least the need to eat and sleep (dammit!)

Here's your reminder, should you need it:

You can't do all of the things, all of the time (and that's OK.)

Since every time I leave this reminder on Twitter I get a positive response, it looks like I'm not the only one who needs to keep this in mind.

There's no need to get frustrated with yourself, to get angry with yourself, to put yourself down or blame yourself for not getting ABC thing done when you really want/have to.

It's not gonna help, over all

(...unless you're the sort of person who needs to give yourself a kick up the pants in order to get anything done at all - in which case, you do you! Lol. But I think a lot of us are actually too hard, rather than too lenient, on ourselves.)

So, remember, you only have a set number of hands, and you can't do all of the things, all of the time (and that's OK.)

  1. Cee, do you have some sort of telepathic communication with me that I am unaware of? If not, then why does Nerd Church always seem to be what I need it to be at that given moment? It seems like the most logical explanation XD
Jokes aside, I have been panicking the past few days with PhD applications, school stuff, work stuff, a little bit of everything. I feel like everything needs to be completed in a day and it made me so worked up. I'm going to talk with my therapist on Thursday about how my OCD factors into this but this post reminded me on how calendars are there for a reason, planning is there for a reason. You plan so everything doesn't need to be completed in a day. Things can be spread out, and I need to practice this more.

    1. Your faith in my planning abilities is far more misplaced than your faith in my telepathic abilities ;)
