Friday Fics Fix - Horror Movie MCU

'“Who would be controlling it?” Joaquin asked. “And why our camp?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know. Why those six kids in the movie? It’s just entertainment, right? Entertainment doesn’t need a big message with metaphors and motifs.”'

This fic's a fun one.

Sometimes you just want fics to be fun - maybe a little silly - and a lot entertaining.

Plus I'm a sucker for a unique and/or quirky premise - we all know this.

OK, so, hear me out: horror movie summer camp with teenage MCU characters.

...Do I have to say more? Oh, I do, OK - how about this: there's Sam, Bucky, and Steve, as well as Joaquin Torres, Kate Bishop, and Yelena Belova AND America Chavez, Peter Parker, and Kamala Khan!

(The fic author really did pull all the toys out of the box on this one! Lol.)

And SamBucky are (teenage, camp counsellor,) Couple Goals™.

Honestly, if that's doesn't sell it to you, I don't know what will! 😅

(Fandom notes:

SamBucky, also known as Winter Falcon, is a sexual and/or romantic relationship between Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes)

This one isn't really deep - as Kamala says, 'it's just entertainment, right?'

I'm sure I could find some deep meaning in there somewhere if you give me half an hour alone with a coffee machine, but this is one of those times when the entertainment itself is first and foremost.

Like many horror movies, if you poke the plot of this too hard, it will fall apart.

(I mean - why do none of the campers here freak out, and instead go into instant survival mode? We don't know, and it really doesn't matter here.)

I do like, though, that the characters are aware that they seem to be stuck in a horror movie, and that there's very little point in trying to find the logic - survival's more important.

...Which is a little like the world has felt like for the last few years, really.

We are, essentially, living through some kind of hybrid horror-apocalypse-comedy flick. 2020 did not take place in a logical universe - I defy you to prove me wrong.

(Ha! Told you I could find a deep meaning - and I didn't even need a coffee machine! ðŸ˜… In other news: it's hot here, and my brain may have melted.)

That added a level of self-awareness, like in the film The Final Girls, where a bunch of kids get stuck in a famous-to-them Friday the 13th style summer camp horror flick.

(That one's not that deep either - although it does sneak some messages about grief in there on the sly.)

Content Warnings for this one:

- horror elements, like everywhere

- blood

- gore

- serious injury

- general violence

- gruesome deaths

- grief

- adult references/humour

...as always, I may have missed something, so be careful.

This week's fic, then, is:

These Things That Would Eat Us by Elisabeth Monroe
