Nerd Church - The Writer Diaries: Write Your Obvious

You're the only one of you.

( *Starts mentally singing ME! by Taylor Swift and Brendon Urie: 'I'm the only one of me! Baby, that's the fun of me!...'* Lol.)

Hooman-bean-brains are one of the most complex things in the known universe (I know, right? We're special!) and yours is just that: yours.

Write Your Obvious

No-one else's brain will ever work in exactly the same way as yours does.

We may come to the same conclusions or think along the same lines as someone else - but at the end of the day our brains are ours alone: entirely unique.

So the stuff that's obvious to you?

It isn't always obvious to everyone (or sometimes anyone) else.

Sometimes, the way your brain has pieced together this wild wild world of ours is different to what everyone else is thinking.

(Or at least, different to a large enough number of people to make you feel that way.)

When I wrote a short-story type-thingummy called 'Dunkirk Spirit' a little while back...

...which you can see on Medium here, or on Dora Reads here, gotta get that promo in!... 😅

...it was because I was stunned - am still stunned - that people didn't connect migrants trying to cross the English channel at Dunkirk with the WW2 Dunkirk evacuation.

To me, it's obvious - the desparate migrants of today mirror the desparate soldiers of 1940 in so many ways.

But... somehow people just don't see it.

The little boats, the traumatic events leading up to the journey, the danger of the journey itself... they're the same.

And to me it was the first thing I thought - the first connection my brain made - that we go on and on about 'Dunkirk Spirit' in the UK as a prime example of British integrity and values

...yet we don't show that same 'spirit' to people who are in the same situation, in Dunkirk itself.

(Also, if you've read a lot of my stuff, it'll come as no surprise to you that the universe made me write it - these things happen 😅)

So when you write - whether it's blogging, non-fiction, fiction, even poetry - realise that your weird-a** hooman-bean-brain is the only one which sees things in the way you see them.

...So show that.

Write your obvious.

Because it's not obvious to everyone else.

And, if we're lucky, we might just show someone a whole different point of view.

What things are obvious to you but not to other people?

Writers, blogger, content creators, etc.: do you write about those things?

Talk to me! 😊💬

  1. This is very good information to here, Cee! Right now I'm really wanting to write about queer representation in ice hockey. It's obvious to me that there is a lot of toxic masculinity in ice hockey, and that this prohibits representation in the sport. While other people might not recognize this and just chalk it up to the culture of the sport. It's something my sister and I talk about a lot, and I think it's time someone wrote about it!

    2. Of course! I'm definitely aware that an extensive amount of research would be required. It honestly would probably just be something I write for fun, not necessarily to be published, but I do hope for more of these stories in the future. There is an extensive queer community in ice hockey that gets rarely any attention, and I just hope there's representation soon enough.
