Friday Fics Fix - Road Trip With Steve Rogers

'Bucky's voice in the back of his head told him they both knew that really Steve wasn't going to just leave a kid in a gas station parking lot in the middle of nowhere. Who was the Bucky voice to tell him that? He was right, but still.'

Honestly - and you know I'm always honest with you dearest nerdlets - I don't know what exactly it is that I read, with this fic.

I don't know what exactly to make of... *waves hands to encompass entirety* the whole thing.

Still, it's pretty cool!

It's got the most awesome vibes, but very little happens.

And, honestly? I wanted more. It's quite a short fic, and I would've loved it to be longer even though I'm not entirely sure what the whole *waves hands* point was. If it even had one.

Hell, maybe the points was the vibes - and if so it did that very well!

So, this fic is MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) - because I am seemingly unable to escape the MCU content at the moment, and have very little desire to in all honesty.

There might be a couple of very mild MCU SPOILERS here (both this post and the fic,) although they'll be for the older films, if anything.

But anyhow - possible SPOILERS, OK? SPOILERS!

This fic sees Steve Rogers - aka OG Captain America - embarking on a road-trip after his one true love, Bucky Barnes (FU Marvel, you know it's true 😘)

So he's merrily swanning along, only to find a teenage girl asleep on the hood of his car.

Which I think we can all agree is a stranger danger moment for all involved, especially when you're a superhero searching for your brainwashed assassin one true love.

'So... you found a teenage girl asleep on your car in a gas station.'

But anyway, he asks her name, and she answers: Loki Laufeyson.

I sh** you not.

Now, the author doesn't take this in the over-the-top direction that my sass-ridden brain would've gone for, neither do they point it towards saccharine sweet.

Instead, what we get is the vibes of the road-trip portion of an indie movie.

Complete with a Gender-Fluid teen Loki, because canon.

...And I kind of love it.

(Fandom notes:

Canon = the 'official' stuff in a book/film/TV series/whatever)

Very few Content Warnings here, but be aware of mild cases of the following:

- family issues (b/c Loki)

- memory issues (b/c Bucky, but not just Bucky)

- general trauma baggage (b/c Bucky and Loki)

- a teenager and a grown man getting a motel room, NOT in a dodgy way - all innocent resting, but thought I'd give you a heads-up on that one b/c of the implications

This week's fic, then, is:

A Road Trip With Gods and Killers by CrowCulture

Would you be able to resist turning this premise into a sass-fest?

How often do you think indie-film-style-y road-trips actually happen?

  1. Sometimes the point of a story is just vibes, and I'm ok with that! I do love an indie-style road trip (to watch, not to embark on). I don't think these road trips happen a lot in real-life. I hate road trips myself, as I can get restless very easily.

    1. Ha, in my experience road trips involve a lot less cool vibes than you get on screen! :) <3
