It's Thursday, this is Dora Reads, and I'm tired so expect a certain amount of archaic verbosity 😉😅 - let's get some comics-y, superhero-y goodness.
TV Trailers
A new trailer for Disney+'s animated series, Marvel's What If..? looks like just the kind of Alternate Universe f**kery that fandom loves.
Big fanfic vibes, and certain to spawn more.
I'm still a little on-the-fence about the animation style, I think it's cos we're aiming for a somewhat-realistic style, but there's disturbingly few shadows. Makes it seem weird. *shrugs*
Warning: mild flashing images, general violence
TV Shows
Episode 5 of Disney+'s Loki was freaking awesome.
Once again, this is a SPOILER-free zone, and yes, I'm an episode behind.
So please reciprocate the SPOILER-free-ness cos I haven't seen the last episode yet!
Two caveats to SPOILER-free:
1. If it's in a trailer, it's fair game
2. Queer IDs are not SPOILERS.
I really enjoyed this episode.
I couldn't help but feel that a whole series based around this episode would be something I could get on board with.
Give me 6 hours of Loki literally arguing with themselves against a backdrop that uses a post-apocalyptic wasteland aesthetic, and I would be there!
I think that's partly because of the potential for character-driven-ness, partly because of the banter, and partly because of the batpoop elements that we get in the best ways in this episode.
(I love batsh** bizarre elements #SorryNotSorry)

But we can't just hang around in this world of intriguing egotistical bickering and survivalism, because that darned plot keeps getting in the way!
Not that the plot developments are a bad thing here, I'm just far more interested in the other sh** going on - like I was with episode 3, I guess. 😅
Ugh, and that effing clock thing!
...I really want to rant about the clock thing.
But I will refrain.
Because directing this much vitriol at a fictional AI can't be healthy 😅
Also, what is judge-lady's problem?
I mean, aside from emotional turmoil regarding the duplicitous fascistic omnipotent organisation she's dedicated her life to?
It's the sash, right? That sash with that jacket will put anyone in a bad mood.
(Also, side-note: I legit. thought her name was Ramona, but apparently it's Ravonna. Owen Wilson needs to enunicate better - plus I think this is the longest I've ever watched him without him saying 'woah.')
I also love that we got a lot of the most-iconic Loki-related imagery from the comics here - even if only briefly.
Presidential-candidate-Loki deserves more screentime dammit! 😅
Other Stuff
The absolutely fantabulous YouTuber Jessie Gender made a whole in-depth video explaining the complicated (and at times just downright weird,) history of Loki as a Queer icon - both in mythology and in Marvel.
Warning: flashing images, MCU SPOILERS, discussions of Transphobia and Homophobia/Queerphobia, general violence, all sorts of mythological f**kery, mild adult humour and references
run-time: 57.08
Proving that Ryan Reynolds is actually the true evil mastermind of content marketing, he's realised a 'Deadpool and Korg React' video.
This sees Deadpool and Korg (Taika Waititi's rock-based character from Thor: Ragnarok) react, YouTube-style, to the trailer for Waititi and Reynolds' new film, Free Guy.
...The levels of meta are right up Deadpool's street.
See? Evil mastermind of content marketing.
Warning: flashing images, general violence

I also made an index of my Loki posts on Medium, which you can see here.
And to end, as is traditional, with some shameless self-promo, you can catch up on all of June's comics posts (and all of my other posts) in my monthly wrap-up here
Is Ryan Reynolds an evil content marketing mastermind?
Do you want more screentime for presidential-candidate-Loki?

Personally I loved alligator Loki. His little helmet stole my heart!
ReplyDeleteI've seen him called 'Croki' a lot - which is both clever and raising the question of whether he's an alligator or a crocodile. ;) I loved that Loki was like, (to paraphrase,) 'And the really sad part is I'm not even finding that that strange!' Lol.
