Comics Wrap-Up - So Tell Me Right Now, You Think You're Ready For It

'comics Wrap-Up' with lined-notebook-style background and speech bubbles containing heart symbols

It's Thursday, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier finishes tomorrow (*gasp*,) let's get some comics-y superhero-y goodness!

Film Trailers

We have a trailer for Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings!

I know nothing about this character, but I'm loving this trailer! (And I love Awkwafina!)

Warning: flashing images, violence

This week I read Volume 1 of You Look Like Death: Tales From the Umbrella Academy*

This is a The Umbrella Academy (TUA) prequel spin-off series featuring my beloved Queen (although... only the TV version is confirmed to be Queer - writer/creator Gerard Way needs to get on that,) Klaus Hargreeves.

The foreword was written by Robert Sheehan, who plays Klaus brilliantly in the Netflix series, and Gerard actually dedicated the book to Robert, which was super-cool.

I always think I remember how much more Klaus' powers are advanced in the comics vs the TV series, but I never actually remember the extent of his comics powers - it's actually kind of terrifying how powerful Comics!Klaus is.

Comics!Klaus is the same but different to TV!Klaus - like, they're clearly the same character, but with sharper edges in some places, and smoother ones in others.

Plus Comics!Klaus lives in a world where vampire chimp druglords are a thing so... somehow the comics have always been this batsh** - the TV show is the grounded, more realistic, version of TUA. No, really.

Was it as awesome as I hoped? YES!

(I could've done without the spider stuff though #JustSaying)

It's Klaus being Klaus - and I love Klaus being Klaus.

Because it is Klaus being Klaus though, it puts the GRAPHIC in graphic novel.

Lots of graphic drug use from early on, escalating to graphic heroin injecting. There's also graphic violence, blood, injury, and references to sex work as well as references to child murder and abuse.

So, y'know, stay safe dearest nerdlets!

TV Shows

The Falcon and The Winter Soldier (TFATWS) episode 5...

*incoherent screaming*

ALL THE SH** IS HITTING THE FAN AT ONCE!!!

(Still a spoiler-free zone #NoWorries)

Sam and Bucky (at the same time): No!

And wow Marvel, we are not afraid to tackle the tough issues, like racism, are we? Well done.

Plus actual talk about mental health and feeling between two dude bros?! Yes!

(Don't think I didn't see the Queerbaiting and M/F smokescreen though Marvel, I see you.)

The last episode streams from tomorrow (Friday 23rd April) - WHAT DO I DO?!

I'm not ready for this series to be over - and I am not ready for what might happen in this last episode!

*more incoherent screaming*

Wish me luck!

  1. My sister and I are slowly working through all of the MCU movies. I haven't seen all of them myself and it's nice to introduce her to the world. Tonight we're watching Captain America: The Winter Solider which seems fitting :)
