(Warning: this post discusses Coronavirus/Covid 19, Lockdowns, and Depression/Anxiety)
Since I'm once again in Lockdown, and now it's not just local but national for Wales, I figured I'd have a vague ramble about some of things that've been keeping me going through the weirdness that is 2020.
Obviously this isn't an extensive list - as I've no doubt irritated you by saying before now, self-care is made up of lots of little things put together.
And there are a lot of little things for yours truly, because I have mental health problems in the middle of a global pandemic ππ
So here's just 5 of the many things that've helped to keep me going this year:
1. Weaving
I've only been doing this since mid-September but OH MY GOD I LOVE IT!!!
I have a little lap-loom, and a shuttle, and I'm away! So much fun.
I mean, I've always been a crafty person - I love knitting and card-making, but clearly I needed to add to my list of 'things that make me stereotypically Welsh' by adding a loom. *shrugs*
(The Bestie has a spinning-wheel. We're halfway to running a woollen factory between us π )
...I really wish this girl looked less like yours truly π

I find it also helps when the Depression/Anxiety's bad, because I find it useful to do something with my hands, and there's also a nice rhythm to it.
2. Kung Fu Panda in Welsh
OK, so there's a animated series based on the Kung Fu Panda films, right?
And there's a Welsh language TV channel called S4C.
If you combine the two you get magic! (Also known as Kung Fu Panda: Anturiaethau Aruthrol)
Like, I love this thing more than I love the legend that is Spynjbob PantsgwΓ’r.
3. Kitties!
I think this one is self-explanatory. My cats rock.
Cat pics and vids on the interwebs are awesome too.
4. YouTube video essays
I'm so nerdy.
I love video essays on YouTube. People analysing random horror films from like 20 years ago? F**k yeah! I'm there.
They're also really handy because I'm the kind of person who needs some background noise etc. to work, so a lot of the time I put video essays on on one side of my screen, and work on the other.

It stops my Anxiety from kicking in, because I can divert the brain-energy I use on over-thinking into thinking about the video essay, freeing up the rest of my brain to do productive sh**! π
5. Fanfiction
Fanfiction is awesome sauce and is gonna change the world. The fanfolk know it, it's just gonna take a little longer for the rest of the world to catch up π
You can use fics to explore emotions, think about the way the world works, etc. etc., or to just bask in the comforting familiarity of the media you love.
Plus, fanfic has a wealth of the characters we love dealing with everyday problems, domesticity, etc. - and that can be really mood-boosting π

So, that's just a few of the things that've been keeping me going this year! π
Self-care's about doing a multitude of things to take care of your mental and physical health, but I wanted to write this post to show that your self-care can be something as obscure as Kung Fu Panda in Welsh, or as popular as kitties, and it's all OK!
So long as you're doing what's right for you, (and not hurting anyone, including yourself,) then it's all OK.
Take care of yourself, dearest nerdlets.
Nerd Church is going on a break next week and will be back on 8th November 2020
What are some of the things you've been using to keep you going?
Are any of them weird and wonderful?
Talk to me! ππ¬

I loved the positivity in this post! The way you feel about weaving is how I feel about knitting. It's so comforting! Also I love the specificity of Kung Fu Panda in Welsh. Glad you've found joy in these things, Cee!
ReplyDeleteThanks Em! I love knitting too, I'm just *so* into weaving right now! Lol.
DeleteKung Fu Panda in Welsh is amazing though!!!! It just makes me so happy every time they say Mwnci (Monkey,) or Ddraig Rhyfelwr (Dragon Warrior) XD
Books have been keeping me going! And blogging. And having a dog and a toddler to look after. I’ve done yoga every day since the start of the pandemic. Yoga has become my unintentional COVID hobby.

Books are a given, obv. ;)
DeleteGlad you like Yoga - I can't be doing with it, for which I blame my parents for the over-exposure to hippie cr*p in my childhood! Lol ;)
