'“Being a superhero is cool and all in theory,” Freddy admits, “but I guess it’s kind of the pits sometimes. It can get a little intense. All those tragic backstories and the almost dying and stuff.”'
I love the DC film Shazam!
It's fun, wacky, so random, but also has some goddamn heart to it.
...Plus the costumes are peak Silver Age camp superhero costumes! 😅
The thing about Shazam! is that Billy Batson is actually... just a kid.
When he says 'Shazam!' he turns into a muscular adult dude, but he is literally a teenage kid.
And that's what this week's fic handles so well.

Superhero-ing isn't all sunshine and rainbows, some of it is downright scary (and some of the horrifying scenes in this film are a little out-of-tone - in a good way, but still: jfc, that escalated quickly!)
And Billy's just a kid.
Sure, this kid's life hasn't been all sunshine and rainbows (which is part of what gives the film its heart,) but that doesn't mean he's prepared to see some of this sh**.
So this fic is about Billy and his friend/foster-brother, Freddy, after the events of Shazam!, (so, y'know, total SPOILER territory. SPOILERS EVERYWHERE!) struggling a bit with the whole thing.
It's not over-done, and the deft-touch balance between light-and-dark honestly made me wanna clap 😁
It does deal with the dark, though, so a few quick warnings:
- trauma
- nightmares related to trauma
- Anxiety attack
- foster care
- fear for loved ones
- references to horror elements
This week's fic, then, is:

Are you a Shazam! fan?
Do you know of any positive stories (books, films, TV series, fics, etc.) about kids in foster care?
Talk to me! 😎💬

The only series I know that deal with kids in the foster system is the tv show The Fosters. I watched it for a while but eventually gave up. I wouldn’t call it completely positive. I mean, the two foster parents are a gay couple soot makes some strides in terms of representation, but there are also some problematic elements.
ReplyDeleteWow, look at all those typos! The “soot” was supposed to be *so it.
DeleteI mean, soot's good too ;)
DeleteI haven't heard of that! There was a show called Tracy Beaker when we were kids, based on the books by Jacqueline Wilson, it wasn't too negative, but it had far too many feels and tears to really count as positive! :)
