Friday Fics Fix - Awkward Flirting In An Alternate Universe

'Harry wasn’t entirely sure where he was, or why, but walking into a condemned building just for it to transform into one of the raunchiest-looking clubs Harry had had the misfortune of entering wasn’t a good sign.'

Week 2 of our Harry Potter-themed fanfiction fest my nerdlets!

Because October = Harry Potter.

I don't make the rules!!!!*

I just abide by them!!!!!*

*OK, so I make the rules, and rarely abide by them. Same diff, RIGHT?!?! ...I might have made this coffee too strong.

This week I have some Omegaverse for you!

I haven't rec'd Omegaverse in, like, 2 years or whatever, because it can get very problematic, very quickly.

So I rarely find Omegaverse fics that I feel comfortable actually rec'ing.

It's not an inherently problematic AU trope though, and there's a lot of scope for authors to put their own spin on it in ways that aren't problematic.

I also like reading non-fanfiction M/M Omegaverse-type romances, partly because it shows that tropes that start in fanfiction can bleed their way out into mainstream romance.

(Fanfiction's gonna change the world! Woop!)

(Fangirling notes:

Omegaverse - is a type of alternate universe/trope found in various fandoms, based on splitting people into categories. It's most common amongst werewolf fandoms or alternate universes.

A general overview can be found on the LGBT Fiction Guide, though the page maybe doesn't show just how much variation there is in the interpretation of each author (imho.)

AU - Alternate Universe.

Trope - kind of half-way between a genre and a stereotype, a literary/cultural plot/character device.)

'"We advise a direct approach."

"Harry is about as intuitive as a dead tree when it comes to romance, I'm afraid."

Draco blinked. "What?"'

Draco Malfoy is kind of a sex worker in this fic... but also kind of like those women who sell breast milk... so be aware of that undertone.

There's nothing wrong with any of that in non-exploitative and consensual circumstances, but I thought I'd point it out.

There's also other sexy-time references and references to groping and sexual assault, but no graphic sex scenes.

#JustToLetYaKnow

What we have here, essentially is more awkward flirting between Harry and Draco (I love that! And you know it!) only based in this complex Alternate Universe.

I like the way this fic uses problematic aspects of this trope and has the characters struggle against them, and struggle to correct them, but that's also not the main focus of the fic.

This week's fic is:

  1. I feel like you should write an entire dictionary on fanfic terms, Cee! I have to admit, there are times when I get completely lost in the terminology, but your explanations always give me clarity.

    1. Ha, thanks! It's always good to know that I'm not irritating everyone with my explanations! I think there's so much slang and specific lingo in different communities/different parts of communities, that we risk alienating other people if we don't provide some kinda explanation!

  2. I love how passionately you believe in Fanfiction changing the world :)
