'She knew she should leave but she couldn’t move. Was completely unable to tear her eyes from the man she thought she knew, who had suddenly become someone completely different.'
Well written fanfiction dammit!

Is there any better feeling in the goddman world?!
This week's fic is from the Stargate SG-1 fandom.
SG-1 is an epic sci-fi series, spun off from a 1994 film, which had 10 seasons between 1997 and 2007 and several spin-offs of its own.
I also freaking love it. Not least because it blends humour in with the more serious stuff.

It's unfortunately far from a perfect series - issues with colonialism, lack of diversity, and more, are apparent when I re-watch the series now.
My friend Alec Te Pohe (who you should totally follow on Twitter) informed me a little while ago that the character Teal'c's head tattoo is appropriated from a MΔori design - which is NOT ok.
I'm not saying all this to dampen anyone's enthusiasm - I just think it's important for us to acknowledge problems in any media we consume. π
This week's fic writes a beautiful romance story between two of the characters - Daniel Jackson and Jack O'Neill.
No, this isn't a canon ship, far from it, but I like to think that a little over a decade on from the series, it would've been possible for this relationship to make it on-screen. Or at least be proposed by the writing team.
A girl can dream, right?
(Fangirling notes: canon ship = official franchise relationship)
What's absolutely brilliant about this fic is that it's written entirely from the perspective of another character, Sam Carter, as she accidentally stumbles on their relationship.
Yeah, I know this could technically be seen as an accidental outing - which would be bad - but it doesn't really come across as it.
Sam isn't surprised by their sexualities at all - she just hadn't realised that they were together.
She also sees and respects their need for privacy - not least because of their position in the Air Force, though this isn't explicitly explained.
I'm also completely loving the friendship between the team members in this fic!
'“Meaning of life stuff?” Sam smiled tremulously as she reached out to lightly ruffle her fingers through Daniel’s hair. “Love you, you know,” she told him softly.
“Pfffffft!” he grinned drunkenly, his face glowing. “Bet you say that to all the archleologilists – archleelogilists – ah cr*p – linglists.”'
Be warned though - bad stuff does happen in this fic.
Mainly to Daniel.
Which if you've ever watched the show won't really surprise you.
But be warned - lots of pain and injuries and stuff.
This week's fic, then, is:

What do you think of a love story being told from the perspective of someone who isn't involved in the romance? What are some faves that you look back on more critically now? Talk to me! πππ¬

I’m glad you enjoyed this fic! It seems like a really cool concept. A fave that I look on more critically is Gilmore Girls. It is my all time favourite tv show but literally every single character is white and there are some uses of the “r” word sometimes. I was shocked when I heard that.
ReplyDeleteUgh, yeah, the 'r' word is pretty inexcusable.
DeleteI think it's good to look more critically on our faves though :) keeps the world moving forward!
Dude, I haven't visited your blog in so long, it took me like ten minutes to figure out how to leave a comment. Jesus. Also: I have never seen this show but I like that GIF you included. Do you have a go-to ship that you always look for when searching for fics? Or, are there like specific ones depending on mood?
DeleteD, you wrote this as a reply, btw! No worries, I'm sure Em understands ;) And I don't honestly care one way or the other - just thought I should letcha know since Blogger commenting seems to be rusty for you! <3
DeleteI like the Daniel Jackson/Jack O'Neill ship because it makes so much sense, but in terms of canon(ish) ships, I like Daniel Jackson/Vala Mal Doran - because she's awesome! Other than that, I just kinda wing it! ;) (Assuming you meant SG-1 fics instead of, like, in general! Lol.)
I often want to kick myself in the butt when I notice things I didn't notice before [or when someone points them to me like you did for Aristotle and Dante] but I guess it is good to be movin gin the right direction and become more conscious :)
ReplyDeleteHey, we're human, y'know? Like you said, as long as we move in the right direction, and try to see things from other angles, we're doing ok!
