Cos fic authors - nerds, fangirls, fanboys, and non-binary fan folks - look at the stigma and the cr*p of previous generations, and say NO!
No to stigma on mental health. No to body image stigma. No to silence on sh** that hurts people!
*takes a deep breath*
I have to be careful not to amp this up too much. It is, after all, 'just' a fanfic.
But it's 'just' a fanfic which says we're not gonna judge people for their struggles.
It's 'just' a fanfic which looks at the tolls - the emotional ups and downs - of life, and says, 'we're gonna discuss this.'
It takes a strong character - Dr Who as played by David Tennant - and shows his vulnerability.
It doesn't over-romanticise it, sugar-coat it, or place it in a neat box labelled 'emotional trauma' which can be taken down off the shelf or placed back on it according to plot requirements.
(Ok, I'm in a strange mood, and I openly admit to rambling, but humour me. 😅)
Not that this fic is perfect: it's not.
Some of the dialogue is clunky. Some of the plotting is awkward at best.
But that's ok. Lord knows, I've read bestsellers that do a worse effing job than this! Lol.
Oh, and a BIG WARNING: this fic deals with self-harm and suicidal thoughts as a major theme. Be careful while reading my nerdlets, you matter - take care of yourselves!
This week's fic, then, is:
Hope Survives Best At The Hearth by stcrmpilot
So, have you read any world-saving fics lately? Do you think fan media is braver than mainstream media? (Ooh! Controversial! 😉) Talk to me nerdlets! 😎💬

oh yes I do think fan media is braver than mainstream media! Anything mainstream has been tampered with and "corrupted" to make it appeal to the masses ;-)
